Abby Johnson was the Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood Clinic in Bryan, Texas from 2001 until she quit her job in October of 2009, following a dramatic chain of events that happened over a period of many months. Her autobiography, unPLANNED, was first published in 2010. I started to hear her sharing her story on Christian radio programs late in 2009. The story of a pro-choice leader jumping ship and going to the “other side” was popular in pro-life circles and Abby became the poster child for the pro-life movement. I heard many national leaders promote her book as a “must-read”, and she was the hottest speaker on the pro-life circuit for fundraising banquets and special events.
I read the book right away, but I didn’t jump on the bandwagon. As I listened and as I read, I was concerned for Abby’s personal healing from her own abortions, as well as healing from the trauma of working in the abortion industry. I was very concerned that Abby was being exploited by the pro-life community, and that her need for personal healing was being overlooked in the flurry of excitement and activity following the abrupt end to her career at Planned Parenthood. I wanted to see evidence that she had been healed from her own abortions, but I didn’t see that particular issue being addressed at all.
Today, I can enthusiastically recommend unPLANNED as a “must-read” because I believe Abby has experienced complete healing and restoration with God. Read her very personal account, “Healing in Public” and see how God fulfilled His purpose for Abby to be completely healed. unPLANNED is a heart-stopping personal drama of life-and-death encounters. It is a dramatic story of what we all long for – good winning out over evil. It is watching the victory of the truth surfacing and soaring above the lies.
unPLANNED won the Retailers Choice Award winner, 2012. I heartily recommend that you read Abby’s book, that you follow her on Facebook, and that you anticipate, with me, the release of her new book this fall, The Walls Are Talking, a gripping collection of stories about what happens inside the abortion clinic.
